Fat Loss Friday - Visualize Your Weight Loss

Weight loss goals are important. Your dreams of wearing a certain size or see a specific number on the scale are also important. Are these weight loss goals and dreams where you can see them? Do you have a visual reminder of what you want? Take it out of your head and create a weight loss vision board.

To see it is to believe it. Whether you call it the law of attraction or a visual work in progress, a weight loss vision board works!

Weight loss goals are important. Your dreams of wearing a particular size or seeing a specific number on the scale are also important.
Visualise your weight loss
Are these weight loss goals and dreams someplace that you can see them? Do you have a visual reminder of what you want? Take it out of your head and create a weight loss vision board.

A weight loss vision board is a great tool to consider a work in progress as you lose weight, get closer to your goal, change habits, experience successes along the way, or even photographs. You can put photos of you, pictures from magazines of a body that you'd like to achieve, meaningful words or pictures from magazines that inspire or motivate you. If something is of significant importance or meaning to you, it will keep you focused. It will be a reminder of your weight loss goals and can be included on the board.

Take a photograph of yourself every month. As you lose weight, place the photos reflecting your progress of a smaller body size. Another tip is to wear the same clothes each month for the photo. Again, as you lose weight, you'll see the clothes becoming loose and then baggy. This is another great way to keep motivated by seeing how far you've come.

Include a photograph of you at a smaller body size. Cut out a photo with a body size you'd like as your own goal. Put your face on that body for a motivating visual.

If you want to exercise more,
Use motivational pictures
cut pictures that motivate you such as a toned body, a photo of someone exercising, hiking, walking or running, or other mementos of inspiration to you.

Make a graph of your starting weight and keep track of your progress. Show your goal weight as well so you see yourself moving closer and closer to it on your graph.

A client that I work with has created her own weight loss vision board. She hung it in her kitchen which has been a very effective way to stay on track. At times that she's been tempted or even headed to the kitchen, she sees her weight loss vision board front and center. It has saved her from many extra calories and pounds, and kept her motivation and confidence high that she will achieve her weight loss goal.

Make a visual reminder of motivation and inspiration by creating your own weight loss vision board. Create a visual center that updates and changes often as you lose weight. Have fun with it as you create it and update it to reflect your personal change and weight loss. Be creative; think big, think out of the box in whatever you place on your weight loss vision board. When it comes to any goals and success, see it to believe it. When you see it - you can be it!

Fat Loss Friday - How to Beat the Winter Blahs and Lose Weight

Winter is hard on diets. First, you have Thanksgiving, Christmas Hanukkah, and New Year's Eve. Then, there is Groundhog Day, Mardi Gras, and Valentine's Day. Too much turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, ham, gravy, pumpkin pie, and candy.
Winter is hard on diets
You have a lot of cold, wet, snowy, miserable days where all you want to do is eat and sleep. Many times, I have wanted to go out, but it was just too cold and rainy or snowy. I ask my wife, "do you want to go out", and she'll say, nah, let's just stay in. So, by spring, you have put on an extra ten pounds and feel crummy.

How do you keep fit during the winter months? Well, I do a few small things every day. First, I watch my portions. It's easy to keep eating, especially when you cook like I do, but you need to know when to stop. If you eat slowly, your brain has time to tell your stomach that you are full. I also try not to snack all day. Three balanced meals plus one healthy snack between lunch and dinner will help you lose weight. Also, watch your carbs and fat. Finally, stay away from sugary fruit drinks and diet sodas.

Next, try to stay moving. We all have heard "an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion stays in motion..." from Isaac Newton. Well, it works for people, too. Find a mall to walk in, or put on a coat and go outside. If it's too risky to drive, do some exercises at home, or hop on the exercycle. You can burn calories by going up and down your stairs if you have them, or just moving around your house. Stay motivated, and stay focused!

Third, drink water. Water keeps you hydrated and keeps your appetite in check.
Keep hydrated even in winter
Many people recommend drinking 8 eight ounce glasses of water per day. Just remember 8x8. You lose water through sweat and going to the bathroom, so it needs to be replenished throughout the day. Water is also good for your skin and hair. Plus, if you catch a cold, you need to drink plenty of fluids.

Fat Loss Friday - What Is the Difference Between Weight Loss and Fat Loss?

What is the different between weight loss and fat loss? Which of these two types of body mass losing processes is healthier? Which of the two can be attained quicker, which of the two works more effectively? And ultimately, which between weight loss and fat loss is an overall better body mass losing process? A great comparative match-up these two make, but in the end, there may only be one which would ultimately be better than the other.

First off, fat loss and weight loss are two totally different processes. The common misconception people often make is thinking and claiming that the loss of fat and weight loss are one and the same. That could not be any more wrong. While losing weight can mean loss of fat, it does not necessarily mean that they are one and the same process of losing body mass. There are specifics ways each hold, and though they may have a few elements which are highly identical, they are separate processes overall.

Fat Loss
Scales alone don't tell the full story

What is fat loss? In its most basic definition, the loss of fat is the process of losing body fat using a variety of means. Those means may differ from exercise, to diet, to even liposuction procedures. However the means may differ, as long as their goals are focused toward losing fat.

Fat is not all bad, but is not all good either. Fat is needed by the body because it is what the body burns when it is put through stress and work. It is unhealthy for either a man or a woman to have 0% body fat; what would his or her body have to burn then? In the absence of fat, the body eats other parts of itself like muscle, which is more on weight loss already. The normal fat percentage men should have is between 12 to about 20 percent; women should have significantly more, around 15 to about 25 percent, since they would need extra fat for when they get pregnant.

This is easily mistaken to be the same as weight loss since a lot of people think all their weight is composed of fat. This is not true. Yes, a person's weight is composed of his or her fat, but overall weight is total accumulation of more than just fat (which will be touched upon later on when weight loss is discussed). Fat is not the only factor which makes a person heavy. Fat is, however, the most dispensable and expendable excess of the body which can be lost to make a person's weight lighter, without his or her body being unhealthy.

Weight Loss
Don't concentrate on weight alone

Weight loss, similar to fat loss, is also the process of the body losing fat, but not only fat. A person's body is composed not only of fat, but also of bones, muscles, tissues, organs, skin, and many more. Fat alone does not make a body heavy, but all the internal and external parts of the body, as long as it is attached to it, is what makes a body weigh the way it does. Weight loss then, is the process in which the body loses fat, or muscle mass, or bone mass, or organ weight, or skin weight, or a combination of all of these.

Weight loss is not entirely a bad process your body can potentially go through, but compared to losing fat, it is not an advisable process for your body to go through. Weight, as an overall category, is highly essential for your body's overall health. Losing muscle mass or bone mass is not something your body should go through. This is why your body needs fat, so it does not eat muscle or bone mass.

When a person loses more than just fat, the body highly decreases in weight. If you are an individual who has no more fat to burn or lose, you should be very, very careful not to go overboard and lose more than just fat. People like anorexics suffering from anorexia often do not have fat left in their bodies to lose or burn, so they become thinner, and more fragile, until they die due to severe weight loss.

In this match-up between these two goals, it may seem that fat loss is the preferred victor over weight loss. It may be the case, but do keep in mind that weight loss is not an option you shouldn't choose to take. Just be wary, however, to only have a goal of losing fat and not any other type of weight, and this match-up might end with a draw.

Monday Muscle - Why You Need Weight Training For Weight Loss

Have you been trying to lose weight, but you've been unsuccessful? Do you spend hours at the gym and yet your body doesn't seem to change one bit? Then you need weight training for weight loss. When you go to the beach, you notice the people who are completely fit. Their muscles are toned, they look healthy and strong. This is the ideal body that we all want, and the one we are actually designed to have.

In order to get a body like that, you need to put stress on your muscles. (You also need a good nutrition plan, but that's a topic for another article!)

You see, cardio is absolutely important. It decreases your stress. It boosts your mood. It conditions your heart and makes it strong. And it just feels darn good to get up and move! Because weight loss is, in basic terms, burning more calories than you take in, you can certainly lose weight by doing cardio. But you want to look fit, right?

There are two problems with doing endless amounts of cardio:
Cardio

#1. You get burnt out from it, and then you start to lose the mood-boosting benefits. :(

#2. It doesn't stress your muscles enough and therefore doesn't change the shape of your body. :(

Weight training for weight loss gives you maximum benefits because:

#1. Stressing your muscles changes their shape, which in turn changes the shape of your body, making it look leaner and stronger. :)

#2. Muscle burns more calories than fat, even at rest. :)

How to lose weight by weight lifting.

If you're someone who's stressed for time and money, I have great news for you. You do not need to join a gym to get the benefits of weight lifting! While that's something you can certainly do if you enjoy going to the gym, it's not necessary.

Here are a few other ideas of how you can stress your muscles, tone your body and lose weight - quickly and easily.

#1. You can purchase a piece of equipment that you can use at home. Find something that allows you to work plenty of muscle groups and that's easy to set up.

#2. You can purchase a few sets of dumbbells and use them to do curls to work your biceps, kickbacks to work your triceps, chest presses to work your chest, lunges to work your legs and a variety of other challenging exercises to transform your body.

#3. You don't need to purchase anything! You can simply use your body weight to get a fantastic workout. Think push-ups, planks, crunches, lunges, jumping jacks and squats. Do a search on the internet to find tons of exercises and videos.

How much weight-lifting is necessary for weight loss?

More good news! You really don't need to do any crazy 3 hour weight-lifting sessions. Only professional body-builders really need that much weight lifting. (And even they might be overdoing it?)

You really only need about 15-45 minutes of intense weight training 2-5 days a week to get great results. A 15-minute workout that includes cardio (jumping jack squats, for example) can be a great 5 days a week workout. It's quick and effective.

If you'd like to just work on your muscles and not rush through the process, then a slower 40 or 45-minute workout might be better for you. In that case, you probably would only need to do this type of training 2-3 days a week, alternating cardio on the other days.
Weight training

You will most likely want to vary what you do. The more you change what you're doing, the more your muscles will get confused, and the more areas you'll work. Plus, you're less likely to get bored. :) So, continually change what you're doing.

How will you know when your weight training is paying off?

Look in the mirror! Yes, that's obvious, but you'll notice the most changes by looking in the mirror. When you're building up your muscles, you might not notice a huge change on the scale. That's because muscle weighs more than fat. So don't be concerned with the scale! Look in the mirror. Notice how your clothes fit. Notice how you feel. These are the factors that are most important when losing weight.

Fat Loss Friday - Why Do You Crave Junk Food And How To Break The Vicious Cycle

Pizza, cheeseburgers, cookies, French fries and soda these happen to be some of the most addictive foods out there. Consuming junk food simply feels good and it gives you the satisfaction that no fruits or veggies will ever deliver.

Why is junk food so addictive? Why do you feel powerless when it comes to resisting the temptation? Science has actually got a very good explanation of the addictive nature of junk food and the cravings that we have for it.

The Science behind Junk Food Cravings

Willpower could be insufficient to overcome the major cravings that you have for junky, fatty and sugary treats.

According to a study presented in Frontiers in Psychology, the long-term consumption of junk foods makes us lose our desire for other kinds of meals. It is normal for everyone to desire a heavy, delicious and calorie-rich meal every now and then. Eating junk food on a regular basis, however, changes brain signals and makes it impossible to feel satisfaction from anything else. In other words, substituting the pizza for a salad is a lot more difficult than actually coming to the conclusion you need to do it. It also involves faulty neurological signals that have to be overcome.

This is why people do not binge on carrots and celery. Food companies know what it takes to make junk snacks taste good. The flavours are rich and they hit your palate right from the first bite. Once you get used to this kind of hyper-stimulation, going back to healthy treats that have a much gentler taste becomes an incredibly difficult task.

A final explanation is provided in the Why Humans Like Junk Food report by Steven Witherly. According to the author, two factors are at play. The first one is the taste and feel of the food, the manner in which it melts in your mouth. This is why the delicious crunch of potato chips is so addictive.

The second factor focuses on the foods macronutrient makeup. The perfect combination of far, salt and sugar in junk food makes you desire more and more.

Dealing with a Junk Food Addiction

To stop eating junk food and begin enjoying healthier treats, you may need professional assistance. Weight loss hypnosis is one of the most effective options for breaking out of the vicious cycle.

Hypnotherapy for weight loss focuses on how you think and feel about junk food. It is not about why even if you know why you eat a lot of junk food, it still may be difficult to deal with the addiction. If you, however, get an opportunity to change the way you think about it, you will make some great first steps in the right direction.

Through weight loss hypnosis, you can introduce major changes to your eating habits. If you do not make a change on a sub-conscious level, old habits will creep back in very quickly. Hypnosis will help you establish feelings of deep satisfaction with healthier treats, thus you will never look back.

Junk food addictions are very challenging but they can be overcome. Do not give up and seek professional assistance, in case you cannot make the transition on your own. A bit of help will help you go a long way.

The fasting starts

So the first day of the month long fast started on Thursday 18th. As usual Pakistan started the next day due to the new moon not being sighted in any part of the country. I still don't know why the moon has to be physically sighted. In this day and age we know PRECISELY the position of the moon at any given time, on any given day. Even if the date is a thousand years from now we know where the moon will be in the sky and yet some still insist that the moon has to be physically sighted....

Anyway conventional wisdom has it the first few days of fasting are the hardest as the body is getting used to less food coming in. Those who know me know that in many ways I am an Iconoclast so will now be surprised to learn that I do not hold with conventional wisdom. For me the first few days are relatively easy. Although I do like my food it feels as if a switch activates inside me and I find the beginning of fasting to be no problem at all. Only as it progresses does it feel harder.

This may be due to the fact that glycogen stores are depleted in the first few days. No problem. Then the fat stores are targeted to supply the energy needs for the body - good news!!!

However this is when it gets tricky. As the fast progresses over the days and weeks the body gets the signal that, as always throughout history until relatively modern times, a famine is starting. The low food and water intake then acts as a signal to the body to start self preservation measures. So guess what? It starts preserving those tissues which will ensure survival and these tissues just happen to be fat stores. BOOOOO.

At the same time it starts to cannibalise those tissues which are not so important for survival and require extra energy to maintain. These are the muscle tissue. Just a pound of muscle requires an extra 50 calories per day just to maintain itself. this is the reason it is absolutely essential that any weight loss programme needs weight training to build up some muscle so that you continue to burn extra calories even at rest.

Anyway as the fast progresses is when I really start to feel it. the hunger becomes more acute. My body starts to ache, particularly in the joints.

It's only the first few days so I am still in the glycogen reduction phase. I am even enjoying the feeling of fasting. It's a familiar path. Let's see if it goes the same way as previous years.

I'll keep you posted
